To understand what was really happening on the other side of that desk, I interviewed my mother — a medical receptionist for decades, first for a family practitioner and then retiring from an office of five specialists. When I started asking her questions about her days behind the desk, she was triggered. Years after retirement, she was still carrying it. The phone ringing without end. The same questions on repeat. The person standing right in front of her, waiting patiently, while she tried to hold it all together and still smile.
I didn't finish the interview. I didn't need to.
